How common is drowsy driving?

From cell phones to alcohol, there are a wide variety of distractions and dangerous behaviors that increase the likelihood of an auto accident. However, drowsy driving is particularly risky and it is essential for drivers to understand how widespread driver fatigue is in Houston, Texas, and across the nation. When a driver falls asleep at the wheel or cannot remain alert because they are tired, they pose a serious threat to everyone on the road.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, data reveals that an estimated one out of every 25 drivers over the age of 18 have fallen asleep at the wheel during the past 30 days. Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that an estimated 72,000 accidents were caused by drowsy driving in 2013, resulting in an estimated 800 fatalities and 44,000 injuries. It is also important to point out that these figures are underestimated and the CDC says that as many as 6,000 fatal traffic collisions may be caused by drowsy driving every year. While the prevalence of drowsy driving cannot be precisely measured, it is clearly a major problem.

If you were hit by a fatigued driver, you may be facing a host of hardships, such as physical pain, injuries, medical expenses and more. Also, drowsy drivers cause accidents that claim lives and leave families with unimaginable suffering, which highlights how important it is to hold drowsy drivers who cause an accident accountable.

This post was put together to raise awareness on the prevalence of drowsy driving and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
