A car accident can cause many types of injury

With a population of more than two million people, Houston is one of the most populated cities in the United States. For this reason, it's not uncommon for the roadways to become extremely crowded, especially during the morning and evening commute.

While you hope that you're never involved in a motor vehicle accident, you know that it could happen at any point. Worse yet, you realize that you could become a victim despite the fact that you did nothing wrong.

If you're involved in an accident, even one that appears to be a minor fender bender, make sure you receive immediate medical attention. Remember, some injuries don't present symptoms right away.

Here are some of the most common injuries caused by a car accident:

1. Head and back injuries

Head and back injuries are among the most serious, as these can have a long lasting impact on your life.

For example, if you bang your head against the steering wheel or windshield, traumatic brain injury is often the result. In this case, you may require surgery and long-term treatment and therapy in order to recover.

2. Neck and chest injuries

Whiplash, for instance, is one of the most common car accident injuries. This occurs when the head and neck suffer from a sudden movement, such as when your vehicle is struck from behind.

Whiplash injuries differ based on a variety of factors, including the age and health of the person and the speed of the vehicle that caused the accident.

3. Injuries to the extremities

Injuries to the feet, legs, hands, and arms can be common in a vehicle accident. Specific injuries include: broken or fractured bones, ligament damage, abrasions, and severed limbs.

Note: Depending on the severity, an accident can also lead to emotional distress. An example of this would be a person who is in a vehicle with a loved one who has passed away as the result of an accident.

If you are involved in any type of motor vehicle accident, it's a must that you take the right steps. This includes things such as calling police the police, assessing your injuries, and receiving immediate medical attention.

When you take the right steps after an accident, you increase your chance of receiving the necessary medical treatment and eventually collecting the compensation you deserve from the negligent party.
