Truck driver fatigue puts lives at risk

According to findings presented on the Committee on Oversight & Government Reform's website, almost 48 percent of drivers confessed to falling asleep while behind the wheel over a 12 month period. Unfortunately, many truck drivers are particularly vulnerable to feeling tired when driving, which increases the likelihood of a truck accident occurring. In Houston, Texas, it is important for drivers to do everything they can to avoid a semi truck crash and make the roads safer by ensuring they get enough sleep.

Research has shown that the risk of a trucking accident increases after eight consecutive hours of driving. Also, truck drivers who try to sleep during the day may not receive the same quality of sleep compared to those who sleep during nighttime hours. Additionally, cumulative sleep loss may take a significant amount of time for drivers to recover from. When truck drivers are on the road too much and fail to get a sufficient amount of sleep, they may experience truck driver fatigue, which could have deadly consequences.

Last year, the United States Department of Transportation implemented new regulations intended to reduce truck driver fatigue. Since driving a truck for too many hours over an extended period of time can result in a truck accident, the regulations limit truck drivers to 70 hours on the road each week. If a truck company or driver violates these regulations, they could face stiff penalties. Sadly, too many truck drivers throughout the country continue to suffer from sleep deprivation caused by spending too much time on the road. Truck driving is one of the riskiest occupations and it is imperative for truck companies to make sure their drivers are not dangerously tired.
