Whether they want to want to save gas, get exercise or simply do not have access to a vehicle or public transportation, there are all sorts of reasons why pedestrians take to the road every day. Sadly, in Houston and other Texas cities, pedestrian accidents take place far too often, sometimes resulting in serious injuries and even fatalities. However, there are a number of things that pedestrians can do minimize the likelihood of being struck by a vehicle and it is important for every pedestrian and driver to be aware of the risks and try to prevent another tragic accident from occurring.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published alarming pedestrian accident statistics and helpful tips on what pedestrians can do to stay safe. According to the CDC, an average of 445 people will be sent to the hospital because of an auto-pedestrian accident in the next 24 hours. Additionally, pedestrian accidents claim a life every two hours, on average.
Because of the significant threats pedestrians face, it is important for you to do everything that you can to stay safe when you are walking alongside the road or crossing the street. For starters, try to use a crosswalk every time you make your way across streets. At night, you can make yourself more visible by wearing clothing that is retroactive and bringing a flashlight with you. Although it is best to use a sidewalk, if no sidewalk is available you should try to walk on the road's shoulder while facing traffic.
