Houston taking steps to improve bicycle safety

Houston is a great city for many reasons. Like any other city, however, it isn't perfect - like situations involving bicycle safety. Many drivers don't give bicyclists the attention they deserve, making it somewhat dangerous and a little scary for you to be riding around. Of course, there are some things you can do to help keep yourself safer and reduce the chances of being struck by a vehicle when you're riding your bicycle.

While that doesn't guarantee that you can always avoid an accident every time you're out, it will lower your exposure to injury and give you more opportunity to enjoy your bike rides in and around the Houston area.

Texas drivers can do some interesting things behind the wheel

While it's true that drivers anywhere can do some interesting or aggressive behaviors while in their vehicles, Texas seems to have a very large number of drivers who think that aggressive maneuvers and doing whatever they want are good ideas.

A huge number of these drivers have large pickup trucks, and when that's coupled with not paying close attention to things around them, it can easily become a recipe for disaster for just about any bicyclist. Some of these drivers are inattentive and some simply don't care.

How to protect yourself

To help protect yourself and reduce your risk of injury:

  • Know your whereabouts at all times
  • Look around you, and when you are crossing a street be very cautious, even if you have the right of way. Some drivers won't see you, and some may be intoxicated, texting, or otherwise simply not paying attention.
  • Make sure traffic heading in a cross direction comes to a stop before you proceed, instead of just moving because the light is green.
  • You should also wear reflective clothing and a helmet, and if there are any designated bike lanes you'll want to use them at all times. That can help keep you away from some traffic.

What is Houston doing to help?

Houston is planning a large system of bike paths and lanes to help you and other bicyclists navigate the city more safely. However, if you do happen to be struck by a car while on your bicycle, you could be entitled to compensation for your injuries.

Working with a good attorney who is knowledgeable about bicycle accident cases can help ensure that your story is heard and that you have the opportunity to get financial help so you can recover. Distracted and careless drivers are one of the biggest problems between bicycles and vehicles, and going after these drivers for compensation for a victim's injuries is important.
