What are the dangers of driving at night?

Do you often find yourself on the road during the nighttime hours in Texas? Do you have concerns about your safety after the sun goes down? Do you know which steps you can take to improve your safety when driving at night?

There is no denying the fact that you could be part of a motor vehicle accident at any time of the day, even if it's bright out. However, there are additional dangers to take into consideration at night. Here they are:

  • Decreased visibility. Since it's dark, your visibility will not be nearly as good as it is during the day. This can make it difficult to stop your vehicle in a timely manner.
  • Night blindness. In short, there are many health-related issues that make it difficult to see at night. The symptoms of night blindness include but are not limited to loss of central vision, issues with peripheral vision and inability to see things at a distance.
  • More drowsy drivers on the road. Even if you are 100 percent alert, perhaps because you are well-rested, it doesn't mean that others are as well. You always have to worry about another driver falling asleep at the wheel.
  • Increased construction activity. Nighttime is when many construction crews take to the road. While it's better for them to work at night, as the roads are less crowded, it can increase the chance of being involved in an accident.
  • More drunk drivers. A person can drink and drive at any time of the day, but this is more likely to happen at night (especially on the weekends). You should do your best to pinpoint drunk drivers, so that you can keep your distance.

These are just some of the many dangers of driving at night, all of which increase the chance of trouble.

If you are part of a nighttime driving accident, move your vehicle to safety, stay inside and call for help. You'll want to receive medical treatment, while also marking sure an officer creates a report. In the future, once you're stable, turn your attention to your policy and how to hold the negligent party responsible.
