Know the risks: Truck crashes and their causes

Big rig accidents are some of the most dangerous on the roads. With any big rig accident, the vehicle is so heavy that there is a potential to roll and crush or hit and crush other vehicles. There is a risk of exposure to hazardous materials in some instances, and there is also the risk of impacting multiple vehicles with the same commercial vehicle.

Truck accidents are caused by a number of reasons, some of which include:

  • Driver mistakes
  • Equipment failure
  • Poor vehicle maintenance
  • Improper loading of cargo
  • Inclement weather

What are some common driver errors that lead to traffic crashes?

Some common driver errors include:

  • Falling asleep behind the wheel
  • Texting and driving
  • Drowsiness
  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Merging without a clear path

In many cases, drivers cause collisions because they are too tired or too distracted to be behind the wheel. For example, a driver who has worked for 10 hours may be drowsy from the drive, putting him- or herself and other drivers on the roads in danger.

Speeding is also common among commercial drivers, since getting to their destination faster often leads to higher earnings. This, unfortunately, can also lead to a loss of control of the vehicle and collisions.

What does cargo have to do with collisions?

Another possible problem is with how cargo was loaded. Poorly loaded cargo may shift weight unevenly, leading to a tip-over accident. It could also come loose, falling into the roadway or impacting other vehicles.

Is equipment failure a high risk for commercial drivers?

It shouldn't be, but it can be. Before driving, all commercial drivers should take the time to look over their vehicles and check for defective parts. If they notice that the vehicle is driving oddly, they should have it serviced instead of continuing. Failing to obtain property maintenance for the vehicle or using a vehicle that has parts that are not working appropriately can lead to serious collisions.

Victims of commercial vehicle accidents are at risk of serious injuries or death. The vehicles are much heavier than passenger vehicles, and the risk of exposure to hazardous or heavy materials also increases the threat of injury or death.

Know your rights in Texas if you're involved in a truck accident. Drivers have a responsibility to others. They should always make sure to have their vehicles serviced and be ready to pay attention to the roads at all times. Not doing so can lead to fatal collisions.
