Stay safe in rush hour traffic with these tips

If you live in or around the Houston area, driving in rush hour traffic is a way of life. Even when you do your best to avoid it, you're still likely to find yourself creeping along during the morning and early evening hours.

When navigating rush hour traffic, it's easy to turn your attention to making your way to your destination as quickly as possible. While this is important, your safety and well-being should always be top priority.

Here are several tips that can keep you safe in rush hour traffic:

  • Leave more time to reach your destination: The more time you have in your schedule the less of a rush you'll be in. This allows you to slow down and not feel the pressure associated with arriving at your destination late.
  • Stay in your lane: There are times when you have to switch lanes, such as to exit or to move past a slow moving vehicle. However, you should do your best to choose a lane and stay in it, as this reduces the risk of an accident.
  • Find a different route: There may not be any way to completely avoid rush hour traffic, but a different route could save you a few minutes while also keeping you safer.
  • Don't tailgate: Even in slow traffic, you shouldn't get into the habit of tailgating the driver in front of you. The more space you leave, the more time you have to stop in the event of an emergency. As a general rule of thumb, leave two to three seconds of stop time.
  • Avoid distractions: When traffic slows, many people grab for their cellphone or look for something else to keep them busy. Don't let any distractions get in your way, as these put you at risk of causing an accident.

These rush hour traffic safety tips will enhance your safety, but they don't do anything to control other drivers.

If you're injured in a rush hour accident as a result of another person's negligence, focus on your health and then contact your insurance company. Taking the right steps at the right time will help you collect compensation for your injuries and damage to your vehicle.
